Common questions
Everything you need to know before joining.
What is a tennis ladder?
A ranked list of players. You move up by challenging someone above you and beating them. There is no fixed schedule: you and your opponent agree when and where to play.
Is there a tennis league in New York City?
Yes. Deuce runs singles ladders on public courts across the city, in two divisions split by level so you play people at your stage. One payment for the season, and you sign up on your own.
Where are the matches played?
On public courts around the city. You and your opponent agree on the court and the time. Central Park, McCarren, Flushing Meadows, Fort Greene and Mullaly Park are the regulars, and the app lists every public court in the city.
How is it different from a USTA league?
There is no team, no captain and no fixed match schedule. You join on your own, challenge who you want, and play when it suits you both.
How do challenges work?
You can challenge anyone up to 5 spots above you in your division. They have 48 hours to answer; declining or not answering counts as a forfeit, and you move above them. Once accepted, you have 7 days to play. You can have one challenge out and one coming in at a time. All of this happens in the Deuce app.
Who reports the score?
Either player. The result counts as soon as it is reported, and the other player has 24 hours to flag it if it is wrong.
What level am I?
Pick Up to 4.0 if you can rally at a medium pace and are still working on consistency, placement and net play. That is roughly 2.5 to 3.5. Pick 4.0 and up if you have a reliable serve, can change pace and spin, and cover the court well; most people who played high school, college or league tennis are here. Right at 4.0? Either works. Still unsure? Start in Up to 4.0. If it is too easy, you will climb fast.
How many matches do I have to play?
There is no minimum. The more you play, the more chances you have to climb.
Can I join after the season starts?
Yes, while spots remain. You start at the bottom of your division and climb from there.
Is this a subscription or a one-time payment?
One-time. $65 for the season (October 4 – December 27). You can get a full refund within 48 hours of paying, from inside the app.
Do I need the app?
